Virgin America Now All Wi-Fi

The plucky carrier Virgin America is first airline with full-fleet Internet access: Virgin America said today that all its aircraft have Aircell’s Gogo Inflight Internet service installed. That’s marvelous, because you can now book and expect (short equipment problems) to have Wi-Fi on any flight. This is a key moment, despite the size of VA’s fleet, as I have been saying for years and years that without an airline offering the expectation that every mainline (non-regional) plane they fly having Internet service, passengers won’t adjust their expectations and plans to work (or play) with net access onboard

Enabling diagrammatic de-abstraction and modelling of engineering problems

Abstract This paper discusses efforts to enable de-abstraction of engineering problems from a representation suitable for engineers to that suitable for computer models and code. The key question is to what extent diagrammatic representations of problems can be used in order to provide modelling solutions. To achieve this, a source tree is created, this is translated to computer code, then represented as a result tree.

Fail-Safe Replication Monitor

I am a big believer in the “belt and suspenders” approach to monitoring. Monitoring the status of database replication can certainly be done from an administrative application, but sometimes you just want to be “extra sure” things are working. The script below is a very simple .php page that serves two valuable purposes and is easy to deploy: It verifies that data from the master is actually making it into the slave

DMA Training Courses Changed My Life : 3d, Animation, Film, and Special Effects

Written by Albert Frates : DMA Teen Alumnus Throughout my three summers spent at Digital Media Academy, I have met many new people, that share common goals, and interests.  I have grown more aware of the different aspects of digital media, and have been inspired by both instructors and other students.  However DMA has brought me more than inspiration, and new friends.  It’s brought me a solid footing for my future. I began at DMA summer 2006 only fourteen years old at the time. I took Maya I with Adam Watkins, knowing very little about Maya, or what could be achieved.  In less than a week Adam had brought the  class out of the unknown, and into what I would call my first true steps of digital media at a professional level.  Opening many new doors I began to pursue other aspects of media, (Film, Animation, TV, Games, Web Design, etc…).  The following school year I worked on many media projects, for my school.  Live event recording such as Graduation, and sporting events was the beginning

Wi-Fi Alliance Bumps Features, Enterprise Support

Wi-Fi will expand to include new authentication methods, more enterprise support: The Wi-Fi Alliance, responsible for the brand name Wi-Fi and the certification and testing that stand behind it, will add two new authentication methods to the suite supported as part of WPA2: EAP-FAST and EAP-AKA. EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is a generic method of sending messages between parties. EAP-FAST (Flexible Authentication through Secure Tunneling) is a Cisco replacement for the long-deprecated LEAP (Lightweight EAP), which was broken back in 2004

Use Virtualization to Skip the Learning Curve

When an engineer starts a new job, especially in a start up environment, there is often a rude awakening/reality check as he or she actually logs in and gets to look “under the hood.” Things are often not quite what was discussed during the interview process. The challenge in the first week is to solve at least one of the problems that convinced cash-strapped management to hire you. It’s not a time to be learning on the job or doing a detached assessment and preparing recommendations

Learn How to Use Apple Logic Pro : Audio Recording and Editing

Written by Ben Hazen from the John Lennon Bus Apple’s Logic Pro 8 is a really amazing and intuitive program for recording/arranging audio, and its great comping function is just one example why. This is especially effective with vocals since it can sometimes be difficult for a singer to hit every note and rhythmic value of the melody. With  Logic Pro 8 , the process has been made much easier on both the engineer and the artist

Intel CEO on PC market: green, shoots and leaves

SANTA CLARA — On Tuesday, Intel CEO Paul Otellini took the stage for the opening keynote of Intel’s investor conference, and told the assembled audience the following about the chipmaker’s order and billings pattern: “what we’ve seen so far is a little better than we expected.” As he began speaking those words, laptop keyboards across the auditorium immediately erupted in a chorus of clacking, which continued as he went on: “I’m more firm in my belief than even six weeks ago that we will see seasonality in the second half.” Half of those typing were reporters, who were eagerly filing “green shoots” stories about a possible turnaround in the economy; the other half were investors who were entering “buy” orders for INTC, which had jumped 4 percent in price by the time the afternoon was over.
