Live Migration: Here to Stay

I have recently returned from the HP Technical Conference and, although attendance was down a bit this year (likely due to the economy), there were still plenty of enthusiastic AMD customers and partners in attendance.  The buzz around the availability of the recently released Six-Core AMD Opteron TM “Istanbul” processor and HP Proliant G6 servers was tremendous.  HP has announced seven HP ProLiant platforms based on “Istanbul” processors as well as the availability of upgrade kits for existing G5/G5p platforms.  I’m also happy to report that I had a packed room during my virtualization session on Tuesday. In our booth on the exhibition floor we demonstrated the ability to use VMware’s VMotion to seamlessly migrate a running virtual machine  between an HP Proliant G2 server running Dual-Core AMD Opteron “Rev F” processors (released in 2006), G5 server running Quad-Core AMD Opteron “Shanghai” processors, (released in 2007) and the newest G6 server with Six-Core AMD Opteron processors.  We’ve just released a video on YouTube featuring a similar demo — except that it also includes our upcoming processor codenamed “Magny-Cours” . I’m constantly getting questions on the topic of live migration and VMotion in particular.  Customers want to be assured that they can use VMotion to migrate virtual machines between older and newer versions of their AMD processer-based platforms.   Apparently we and our technology partners could do a better job of getting the word out.  So let’s be clear — the answer is a resounding YES! Here are the facts.  With the launch of our first quad-core processors, AMD formalized a functionality that had existed in our processors for a while under the feature name of Extended Migration.  This capability enabled virtualization software vendors like VMware to support the live migration of a virtual machine between different versions of AMD processors starting with Rev E, which was released in 2004.  Subsequently, with ESX 3.5 u2, VMware released a feature as part of VMotion called Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) that uses AMD Extended Migration to support VMotion between AMD Opteron processor generations.  In order to utilize the feature, each server must be configured for EVC.  For information on configuring EVC, see the “Migrating Virtual Machines” chapter in the Basic System Administration Guide for your ESX release

£10bn national ID card scheme vs. £65m cuts in higher education

Two very controversial topics met in the middle today, when one potentially pointless national identity card scheme which would cost the UK taxpayer between £10-20bn according to the London School of Economics , and a cut of £65m in higher education at university level would cut a further 1,500 full time lecturing and support staff. Even though the two stories are entirely unconnected, caused by decisions in two separate UK government departments, it has nonetheless sparked anger with union

Seattle’s Lifestyle Keeps Us Trailing the Bay Area, Says UW Startup Maven Janis Machala

startups , innovation , Biotech Luke Timmerman wrote: Ed Lazowska, the University of Washington computer science professor, stirred the pot a couple months ago when he said Seattle is a “minor league” innovation town , far behind the big league of the San Francisco Bay Area, so people in the Northwest should quit being smug and start doing something to change that. This week, Janis Machala, the champion of startup creation at UW’s TechTransfer shop , offered up some of her

iPhone users at risk of being ‘pwned’

The team of Charlie Miller and his fellow cybersecurity researcher Collin Mulliner presented an iPhone vulnerability at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas which can allow anyone to take control of all the iPhones across the world. The duo has found a flaw in the way iPhone manages its text messages. The researchers have revealed that the weakness lies in the way the iPhone receives the text messages.

Intel’s prescription for national healthcare reform: x86 Rx

With healthcare reform currently the number one topic of discussion in Washington DC, chipmaker Intel is seizing the moment in order to gain exposure for its own health product, the Intel Health Guide . In a recent Politico op-ed , Intel CEO Paul Otellini argued for moving personal, preventative care into the digital age (with Intel inside, of course)

Yahoo! share value drops – investors wary of deal

It won’t be a happy ending between Microsoft and Yahoo! as far as some share holders are concerned… Doug Caverly reported with WebProNews on Wednesday that since the concept of a deal in which Microsoft’s search engine Bing would power Yahoo! was announced, earlier this week, Yahoo!’s stock plunged a troubling 12.08%. Despite a statement made by Yahoo! President and CEO Carol Bartz, noting that the deal between Yahoo! and Microsoft “comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry,” Yahoo! investors and shareholders are obviously concerned.

NetNewsWire finds a new sync friend in Google Reader (UPDATED)

I’ve been a fan of the NetNewsWire/NewsGator Online combination for some time. Along with NewsGator Go! for the Blackberry (the one I got rid of because I couldn’t seem to manage the three emails I get per day, unpopular as I am I found myself spending inordinate amounts of time reading email when I should be working, lack of popularity notwithstanding) the system provided me with the ability to efficiently manage all my feed consumption whether at the desk or on the road.

Drupal 6 book recommendations

As we’ve just delivered a big lump of functionality onto our website using Drupal, in fact everything is now managed through Drupal except this blog, I thought that you might appreciate a heads up on the books we used during the development process. Getting hold of the right books early in your project will make things a lot easier. Whenever I’m taking on a new programming language or some other technology it always seems to take three books to really get a good handle on it.

Visit Intel SW product marketing folks at SIGGRAPH

Hey, if you are going to be at SIGGRAPH in New Orleans next week, stop by the Intel booth and check out the TBB  ( http://www.threadingbuildingblocks.org ) demo station, where John McHugh and I will be demo-ing TBB in use by some of our key visual computing customers and I’ll be (hmm, discreetly) showing a neat Flash demo of our soon-to-be-beta data parallelization product along with a couple of early demos of it’s usefulness. Hope to see you there!

Revising Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics

When the legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov penned the “Three Laws of Responsible Robotics,” he forever changed the way humans think about artificial intelligence, and inspired generations of engineers to take up robotics. In the current issue of journal IEEE Intelligent Systems, two engineers propose alternative laws to rewrite our future with robots. The future they foresee is at once safer, and more realistic.“When you think about it, our cultural view of robots has always been anti-
