Data Loss Strikes Again!

A couple more stories have emerged on Data Loss that you may or may not have come across over the past few weeks. The first was from a few days ago, advising that Zurich Insurance in South Africa were backing up to Tapes and they lost one of them. This tape held over 1 million documents, over 50,000 related to UK policy holders who have been informed of the loss! Article at: http://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/story.asp?source=itbreakingnews&storycode=380957 The second headline shows once again the security risks & flaws using Cloud based Systems

ISV Yellowpages continues to grow!

A while back I talked about how the Software & Partner Directory (or ISV Yellowpages, if you will) are growing with more and more listings of software companies and their products that are optimized for Intel platforms. You may have noticed recently that http://bx.intel.com , the Intel Business Exchange Solutions & Services Store has a new look and feel and that’s because those solutions have now transitioned to the Software & Partner Directory ( http://ibx.intel.com/directory/ ), and in many cases the Intel Business Exchange Software Store ( http://sx.intel.com )

Everybody is playing IT Manager 3: Unseen Forces now :) Ok, not everybody, but there are many tens of thousands of players, competition is high, and a lot of changes were seen in the LeaderBoard . ISV Yellowpages of Intel

If you’re looking for the all-inclusive database for Intel hardware products, you look no further than http://ark.intel.com and can find whatever you need ranging from processors to chipsets to motherboards and beyond. But what about software companies and software products that are built to work on Intel hardware, where do you find that? That’s when you look for the Software & Partner Directory at http://ibx.intel.com/directory where you can search by category, highest rated and most viewed. Consider it a yellowpages of sorts, where  it already lists over 1800 applications (and we’re working on building it out even further!) Don’t see your software listed

Collaboration and Process Modelling in Engineering and Business – Conclusions

This post concludes the series that explains my research in this subject, and points towards how the research can be used in engineering and business, and how it can be furthered by others. This explains what was achieved in provision of modeling and decision support systems that could automate user-computer translation, and interact with users such as engineers to help them model problems and make appropriate decisions. To make this research into modeling for engineering practical for a wide range of computer literate non-programmers, sustained further research is needed in the areas of visualisation, interaction, modeling, end user programming, and transformation as well as the links between these areas

Never Waste a Good Crisis

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is credited with coining the adage, “never waste a good crisis.” Aside from providing highly quotable fodder for online pundits and comedians, Emanuel makes an excellent point: often a crisis presents an opportunity to try new ideas or embark on new initiatives that we wouldn’t have time for, think are possible or even think of during ordinary times. And the same applies to IT organizations and how they manage their mission critical applications. The typical IT department is always busy implementing new projects – rolling out new applications, building disaster recovery plans, and the like

How to optimize your online videos

On Tusday, Mike Sachoff shared some great tips on WebProNews.com on how to optimize your online videos . As you may know, SES San Jose is going on this week out on the west coast; the tips Sachoff shared in his post came from the SES session “The Next Wave for Online Video.” Speakers shared strategies and advice for optimizing videos for popular services such as YouTube and Hulu. But unlike traditional video optimization tips which focus heavily on optimizing for search, these tips incorporate flourishing elements of the Internet , including social media and mobile platforms

When you vacation, do you remain connected?

As summer vacation time winds down in the US, I’m wondering just how many people worked to stay connected while they vacation compared to those who left the connected world behind.   The trends seems to be we are more likely to remain connected than ever before! Last year I spent nearly 6 weeks vacationing in Europe where nearly all the time I had a wonderful cell and data connection.   I was astonished to see that even in Estonia hours from the city hiking in a wilderness area I had 5 bars and sent and received text messages from the US.

Drupal 6 book recommendations

As we’ve just delivered a big lump of functionality onto our website using Drupal, in fact everything is now managed through Drupal except this blog, I thought that you might appreciate a heads up on the books we used during the development process. Getting hold of the right books early in your project will make things a lot easier. Whenever I’m taking on a new programming language or some other technology it always seems to take three books to really get a good handle on it.

Visit Intel SW product marketing folks at SIGGRAPH

Hey, if you are going to be at SIGGRAPH in New Orleans next week, stop by the Intel booth and check out the TBB  ( http://www.threadingbuildingblocks.org ) demo station, where John McHugh and I will be demo-ing TBB in use by some of our key visual computing customers and I’ll be (hmm, discreetly) showing a neat Flash demo of our soon-to-be-beta data parallelization product along with a couple of early demos of it’s usefulness. Hope to see you there!

Apple eats up Toshiba flash, but maybe not 1GHz ARM for iPod

Despite ramping up production of its NAND flash chips, Toshiba is telling some customers that it might have trouble meeting supply for their orders—a sign that Apple is taking the bulk of Toshiba’s supply for iPods. Meanwhile, Samsung has produced a 1GHz version of the ARM processor used in the iPhone 3GS, though its likely Apple could pass over the design for chips designed in-house by PA Semi.

Part 2 – Birds do it. Movie Stars do it. Cable News Broadcasters do it. But do Software Developers do it? Twitter.

Thanks to those that provided their input on how Software Developers are using Twitter. Interesting enough, Time magazine did a major article on Twitter in their June 15th edition. One of the major premises put forward in this article is that Twitter is changing the rules of engagement.

Monitor Applications, Not Just Servers

It’s a fair question to ask why I’d pay for Enterprise-class application and network monitoring software when free and inexpensive alternatives exist. For many people–myself included in most of the start up companies where I managed our technology operations–we just had to make do with what I could find, create, and support. In many cases, I ended up creating simple web pages that executed tests I defined myself, then hooked those up with a web content monitor (e.g

Monitoring Windows Event Logs for Application and Performance

My personal experience with the Windows Event logs has been frustrating, but there are tools that can turn “useless” into “useful.” The logs themselves ARE pretty useless if you the only time you look at them is when the server is down and you are desperately searching for answers. All too often, what you find then is that they are full of repetitive information–a secondary problem such as lack of disk space–and it is too late to find the event that triggered the cascade of failure.

Cisco Simplified: Network Address Translation for Dummies

I am not a Cisco Certified Anything, but I’ve occasionally needed to tweak router configurations and/or troubleshoot problems related to monitoring the correct application, on the correct ip address, on the correct port, etc., and I’ve picked up a few basic concepts that anyone managing a web application should know. The typical configuration these days is to have a router AND firewall such as the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) previously known as a PIX. Both devices run the Cisco IOS and may support the same basic commands I will detail below for purposes of setting up network address translation
