Dynamic Memory Coming To Hyper-V

Virtualization Nation, I’ve had the pleasure of talking with customers in the last few months and the Hyper-V R2 reception has been nothing but unequivocally positive. Whether it’s been folks in small, medium or the enterprise, they appreciate the new capabilities in Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V and the free Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 . At the same time, we’re always listening to our customers to better understand their business requirements and requests so we know know what to build for subsequent releases.

Explaining Microsoft RemoteFX

Hi, my name is Max Herrmann, and I am part of the Windows Server Remote Desktop Services marketing team at Microsoft. Two years ago, Microsoft acquired Calista Technologies where I came from – a startup that set out to create technology that allows remote workers to enjoy the same rich user experience over a network as with a locally executing desktop. This experience includes full-fidelity video with 100% coverage for all media types and highly-synchronized audio, rich media support including Silverlight and 3D graphics, and of course Windows Aero

Virtualization for Server Workloads: Avanade Case Study, NetApp Whitepaper

Our customers often deploy Microsoft server workloads, such as SQL Server, SharePoint and Exchange, on Microsoft Hyper-V and System Center, and want to know how other customers have deployed these workloads and if there are deployment guidelines from specific solution partners that can help optimize for scale and business continuity.

Installing Solaris 10 Virtual Machine with Oracle VM Manager

Certification of Solaris 10 as a guest OS on Oracle VM is in progress. Some of you may have already be playing around, so here are a few tips of how to install Solaris 10 OS as a virtual machine under Oracle VM 2.2 environment. Solaris 10 OS runs as a hardware virtual machine (HVM) which requires HVM support (Intel VT or AMD-V) on the underlying hardware platform, but Solaris 10 OS has the paravirtualized (PV) drivers as part of the OS installed by default

AMD/Intel Settlement and the Cost of Virtualization

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the latest antitrust and IP settlement between Intel and AMD announced a few weeks ago. Not only is this great news for AMD, but it’s also great news for AMD and Intel customers who will all benefit from what will surely become a more fair, open and innovative marketplace. NetworkWorld’s Jon Brodkin posted an interesting story re: what this settlement means for virtualization compatibility and includes a great quote from Gartner analyst Martin Reynolds: “If they [AMD and Intel] were to integrate virtualization more deeply into the processors as a single standard that companies use, it’s possible virtualization could become less expensive.” Personally, I would love to see this kind of standards-based approach to virtualization ( I’ve always been a big fan of this approach ), just as long as we can ensure that innovations in virtualization continue.

Oracle VM Videos On YouTube

As my boss, Wim Coekaerts pointed out on his blog yesterday, there are a number of good, educational videos covering Oracle VM on YouTube, including coverage of some topics for Oracle VM 2.2 (the latest release). Very easy to find, just go to YouTube and search on Oracle VM (or Oracle VM 2.2 to see those specifically). Of course, you’ll also find some videos on reference customers, partners, and even a video interview with me from the Cloud Computing Expo that I mentioned in my earlier blog entry

Live Migration: The Best Keeps Getting Better with AMD Opteron™ Processors

It’s been a busy couple of months, as AMD has been working in tandem with Microsoft on their whole suite of “new efficiency” products – namely, Windows® 7 and Windows Server® 2008 R2. There has been a great deal of excitement over these launches for some time now; and rightfully so

AMD CPU and GPU Technology – Flying High in the TOP500 Supercomputer List

While a lot of folks know me for having a passion (or is it an obsession) for virtualization and cloud computing – many people don’t realize that I am really a refugee from the world of High Performance Computing. This week I get to put on my propeller hat and attend SC09 in Portland to catch up on the leading innovations – and have a chance to say “Aloha” to my former colleagues at the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC). One of the big events of this annual supercomputing conference is the release of the TOP500 Supercomputing List

Virtualization for ‘Cloud’ vs. "Traditional" Virtualization

My, my…I just looked back and it has been almost exactly 6 months since my last post to this blog. The time has gone fast as we’ve been working hard on a number of things here ranging from the Virtual Iron acquisition integration (going nicely, thanks…) to a number of other projects that I’ll talk about over the next few posts. I plan to get back into blogging much more regularly as I did all during the Spring

Oracle VM 2.2 New Feature: CPU Scheduling Priority and Cap

One of the new features in Oracle VM 2.2 is the ability to set virtual CPU scheduling priority and cap per VM from Oracle VM Manager, which enables you to control access to CPU between multiple virtual machines to align with your IT/business priorities. With this enhancement, users can now control the Quality of Service (QoS) for CPU, network, and disk I/O through the intuitive Oracle VM Manager browser interface. You log into Oracle VM Manager, then proceed to configure the VMs.

Cloud Computing: A Look Back and a Look Forward

October is pretty active month in the cloud computing space, with two big events happening this week that caught my eye: the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco and the Cloud Adoption Arena virtual event. The Web 2.0 conference is about more than just the Internet; it’s evolved to focus on technologies & business models – particularly cloud computing.
