feature: CES in pictures: the good, the bad, the Elvis

CES is a daunting show to cover, filled with emerging technologies, new products hoping to change the world, and a few goofy surprises here and there. What you don’t often see is what goes on around the fringes of the show: the products that don’t get written about, the booth designs intended to draw your eye and get you to walk in, and the weird tricks companies try to get your attention. This year every major player wanted you to put on glasses to look at content, you could get your picture taken with Elvis at a few different places, and if you knew were to look you could sit in Captain Kirk’s chair.

Aircell Adds In-Flight Movies via Wi-Fi

Computerworld reports that Aircell will offer movie rentals while in flight via its Wi-Fi network: I have been predicting this for umpty-umpty years, because if you have storage and a delivery system and content and a captive, bored audience, you have an incredible recipe for video sales. This goes beyond the crummy seatback displays–no matter how good they are, they’re still crummy compared to all other visual displays we use routinely

Barry Beck says “Cathy can outcast me with one hand tied behind her back”

Cathy Beck denied this was the case, and said she’s just getting set up. It wouldn’t be the first time, as you’ll soon find out. I had a chance to sit down with Barry and Cathy Beck, the first couple of fly-fishing , at the Denver International Sportsmen’s Expo .

Journalists barred from covering Kibaki family

Journalists were barred from covering president Mwai Kibaki as he attended a funeral service in his Othaya constituency. Cameramen were ejected from Karima Catholic Church where the service was conducted soon after their interest turned to PNU activist Mary Wambui. This comes as government plans to institute new laws that seek to take away press freedom in the country.

Kelly Galloup and I talk meaty flies, new books and lines (and why we wished more women fly-fished)

Ask any of my fishing friends what my favorite fly is and they’ll tell you it’s undoubtedly the Sex Dungeon. Who wouldn’t love a fly with a name like that? What a lot of people still don’t get though…trout love ‘em too.

T-Mobile Ditches Landline Replacement, Keeps Handset Calling

T-Mobile will stop selling new @Home calling service; handset calling unaffected: T-Mobile introduced unlicensed mobile access (UMA) calling in 2007 , where a dual-mode handset can place and receive calls over either a cellular network or Wi-Fi, and seamlessly continue calls as a customer travels. This service works in homes and offices, and at associated hotspots.
