Some of My Goals for 2010

My Own Top Five Technical Goals 1.  Diversify! It’s time to put some energy into some new projects. 2.  Learn something new.  This list could be one of its own.  At the top of that list would probably be mobile development.  I have plenty of good ideas.  Time to execute.  There are also a lot of new .NET development tools I’d like to get my hands on.  I want to read more on design methodologies, web 2.0, and usability as well

International Sportmen’s Expo 2010: Coming soon to a convention center near you

The folks running this year’s International Sportsmen’s Expo have agreed to put on the show without the need to sit in the dead center of the room so you can actually enjoy it. The default viewing format is 3D, but you won’t see anybody fighting over anti-gravity rocks by shooting recurve bows from atop technicolor flying dragons

Arduino Headed for One Point Oh

In a recent blog post , [Massimo] stated that there will be some stabilizing changes coming for the Arduino platform. The API, IDE, and even the website are targets for the Arduino team’s New Year’s resolutions to bring Arduino to 1.0. This platform is often seen at the core of projects we cover and many that we do not or should not cover

Lightning Rod: keeps you safe from dirty Flashers

A new open source package called Lightning Rod will help to close security exploits in Adobe’s dirty Flash code. A presentation made at the 26th Chaos Communication Congress showed that the package does its job by reviewing incoming code before the browser executes it. Heise Online is reporting that this method can block over 20 different known attacks and can even be used to filter out malicious JPG attacks.

What Should We Teach Software Developers

The great thing about having the career and credentials that Bjarne Stroustrup has is that he can talk about the “Emperor’s clothing” with out people saying “you don’t know what you are talking about.” So it was with interest that grew with each paragraph that I read his recent article in CACM. ( What Should We Teach New Software Developers? Why?) One telling quote: I see the mismatch between what universities produce and what industry needs as a threat to both the viability of CS and to the computing industry.

Groovle 1 Google 0 Over domain name claim fight

Groovle 1 Google 0 Over domain name claim fight When search giant Google Inc filed a claim against small Canadian search engine Groovle.com, Google lawyers probably thinks is a forgone conclusion that Groovel.com will be transferred to them as indicated in the case Google inc filed against Groovel.com, after all, in the previous 64 cased filed by Google about domain names, 63 has been upheld in Google’s favour. Google argue that Groovel.com owned by 207 Media, was too similar to its own, however mediators in the case disagree with Google and refuse to grant the transfer of Groovel.com to Google, the 3 Judges at the body that arbitrated on the case were unanimous in their decision, they added in their statement that the name was not similar enough to confuse people and the word ‘groovle’ was more closely linked to “groovy” or “groove” rather than Google.
