Policing our builds with FxCop 1.36

At work, we are using CruiseControl.NET for continuous integration of our many software projects.  It’s a pretty robust system, which we have configured to use NAnt and MSBuild to compile the projects and package them up for our operations team.  However, there was no comprehensive coding style enforcement on our projects… until now. My manager approached me to add FxCop enforcement into the mix.  FxCop is, in short, a combination style guide/enforcer.  There is a UI tool that makes it easy to define your FxCop projects, setting the rules and target files to review.  A command-line tool can be called directly or integrated into Visual Studio or other build/test tools (like NAnt in our case).  You could even build your own rules on top of those that come with the FxCop 1.36 toolkit .  If you want to ensure that you have easy-to-read code conforming to standard guidelines – either Microsoft’s or your own – check out FxCop. There is not yet direct support for FxCop in CruiseControl.NET , so I had to do a bit of research.  The page listed in the prior sentence did not actually offer me enough guidance to successfully implement FxCop on ccNET, so I did a bit of googling (well, ‘binging’ to be more exact) and found two blogs with entries that were quite useful in clearing the way for me to implement this solution – Mikhail says… and Ben Reichelt’s Weblog .  Ben and Mikhail – thank you for sharing your learning so that I too could integrate FxCop and ccNET.

The Must Read Guide to Internet Slang

So, last night I was online browsing through friends’ facebook statuses while also checking tweets on Twitter when I received a notification that someone commented my last blog (the NBA fining a player $7,500 for sending a tweet) . All they responded with was “SMH”. Now, I’m pretty good with the whole internet lingo thing and I’ve heard this term many times before

10 Tips to Prevent Your Computer from Crashing

Image by Tony Maro Few things are as devastating as be right in the middle of an important project only to have your computer suddenly crash without any warning. Even if you’re not in the middle of anything important, you still have tons of files stored on your computer that (unless you’ve recently backed up your files) are going to be gone forever. Although a computer crash often comes on suddenly when you’re least expecting it, occasionally you may get some warning signs.

Homo Logicus

Alan Cooper hits the nail on the head when he compares programmers to “normal people” in “The Inmates Are Running the Asylum”.  We trade simplicity for control (we’re by nature control freaks), we sacrifice success for understanding (isn’t understanding a major part of success?!?!), we often put so much time and effort into what is possible that we lose sight of what is probable (we’re card-carrying pessimists), and we act like jocks (if you can’t mentally keep up, get outta the way!). These traits in moderation make us excellent programmers.  In excess though, a pessimistic, control crazed, mental bullying, tunnel visioned code monkey creates an endless money pit with nothing usable to show for all her exhaustive efforts. The trait of particular interest to me is the desire to understand at the expense of success.  It’s more than a desire – it HAS to happen!  If I don’t understand how something works, I am reluctant to trust it.  When I build a complex system that works beautifully, I am always astounded by the fact that users don’t want or need to know exactly what is going on to produce the final result.  It’s satisfying when they do – running through the data to find the end result is correct (pat on back).

How can women improve technology?

Being a programmer and a woman does not better enable me to design more user-friendly, intuitive technology.  My higher estrogen levels also do not make me more creative. Oh, if it were only that easy! After all, the training and experience of most programmers is probably very similar.  In Alan Cooper’s book, “The Inmates Are Running the Asylum” (highly recommend), he describes the conflicts of interest that exist when a programmer is tasked with doing real design and how our training (and sometimes inherent traits) make us good programmers and bad designers.  In a time where companies are cutting costs and people and requiring more from each employee, many programmers are tasked with doing all the design work.  Most of us enjoy it – I do.  I like the creative process.  However, given my training and background, self-referential design does not always provide the best result.  Alan Cooper is the father of a design process called “Interaction Design” .  Joel Spolsky suggests “Hallway Usability Testing” (note to self – don’t grab another programmer for this task!) and using the “Five Why’s” .  Our training makes us better designers, not our hormone levels.

Ford Adds BYO Mobile Broadband to Car Entertainment System

Ford offers a remarkable option to add Internet access to an auto: Unlike automakers who have signed up to build in the Autonet Mobile system, a Wi-Fi gateway with a built-in cell modem, Ford is opting for a bit of openness. Car owners with the next generation of Ford Sync (by Microsoft) coming next year can plug in their own USB broadband modems into a slot near the gear shift to enable Internet access over Wi-Fi to passengers. USB modems are offered by all carriers, including Virgin Mobile’s currently unique pay-as-you-go plan.

Women and Computer Science – Is It The Environment?

The Internet was a buzz last week with reports of a study done on the effects of environment on women’s interest in computer science. (Links to articles below) While we’ve been talking about how the atmosphere in a computer lab or a computer class may be a turn off for women now there is a study that confirms this. Apparently not all women are into Star Wars, Star Trek or even science fiction in general

Wee-Fi: Connectify 1.0, Cleveland Free-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy

Connectify releases Windows 7 PAN enabler: Connectify has pushed out the 1.0 release ( free !) of its software that turns on a hidden feature in Windows 7–never completed with the proper user interface–to allow a single Wi-Fi connection to accept local connections while itself connected to a Wi-Fi network (infrastructure style). This avoids the trouble of ad hoc networking, while allowing robust WPA2 security. Cleveland considers 4 1/2 sq mi free network: What’s most interesting about this plan may be the proposed cost: $600,000 to build

Web Host UK – Established budget hosting company

Web Host UK LTD The hosting industry is a pretty saturate industry, this is potentially good for consumers because you have several companies competing for your custom, this in turn mean that the hosting companies give you excellent value for your money in the form of web hosting package packed full goodies. To the experienced webmaster, it is quite easy to unravel web hosting company speak to know that some of the bundles in the package you are being offered are not necessarily useful. For a new webmaster, choosing a company can be extremely difficult as you are not sure whether all the huge web space and the offer of a free domain name is good or bad

Stupid or Not: A Bubble/Jail Filesystem for Chrome Extensions

Note: The Stupid or Not posts are simply dumps of ideas that cross my mind and for which I have no time to research into, nor the resources to implement myself. Yet they pass the “3 days – rotten or not” test, so here it is: Context I was at a Google Chrome Extension event , and thought of how it would interact with the media that connects to your computer, and would extensions be able to access your filesystem to grab let say, pictures from a USB? The answer is as usual, “yes and no.” Since the extensions are javascript, for security reasons extensions are sandboxed , so javascript by itself is not able to access the filesystem but it can load dll’s that can access it.
