McDonald’s Switches to Free Wi-Fi in January

Starting in January 2010, US McDonald’s restaurants will no longer charge for Wi-Fi: The quick-service chain has service in 11,000 of its 14,000 locations in the US, and previously charge $2.95 for two hours access. The network is operated by AT&T, originally contracted by Wayport which was acquired by the phone giant last year. Most AT&T subscribers get free access at McDonald’s, Starbucks, and a few thousand other locations.

Rumor: Apple to include new i7-980X in upcoming Mac Pro

Regardless of recent updates to the Mac Pro line, rumors are circulating that Apple could be upgrading its pro line of desktops early next year with faster processors that sport more cores and consume less power. The information was allegedly leaked from Intel, and the new processors (codenamed Gulftown) will reportedly make use of six cores on a 32nm die with 12MB of L3 cache per chip. Currently, Apple’s high-end machine offers only four cores per processor with 8MB of L3 cache.

IntoDream, the ‘portable’ Dreamcast

What looks like an absolute mess of wires,5 fans,3 batteries, and other miscellaneous equipment squeezed into a Tupperware box on the left? At first we didn’t believe it, but it is actually [John's] fully functioning slick-looking portable Dreamcast on the right. The system runs Quake 3 for a little over 2 hours, not too bad considering it is also powering a VMU, rumble pad, 5 inch LCD screen, and did we mention 5 fans! All in all, it’s still smaller than the original Xbox controller , and we like that one of the greatest consoles is getting some well deserved respect.

Verizon Expands Free Wi-Fi to Wireless Customers

Verizon’s limited, irritating Wi-Fi access for broadband subscribers now extends to mobile broadband customers, too: Old! Unimproved! But extended! Verizon’s Windows-only, laptop/netbook-only free Wi-Fi access, enabled via a subset of Boingo Wireless’s network, has been extended to its mobile broadband subscribers. That’s laptop adapter/card 3G users–not smartphone users, who still don’t get free Wi-Fi. Not only do you have to use Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or 7, but you have to run Verizon’s VZAccess Manager , and manually select a network when one is available

Cooking with Robots: Designing a Household System Working in Open Environments

We propose a cooking system that operates in an open environment. The system cooks a meal by pouring various ingredients into a boiling pot on an induction heating cooker and adjusts the heating strength according to the user’s instructions

CLIMATEGATE QUESTION at Copenhagen From Journalist, MET WITH ARMED RESPONSE From U.N. THUG

If Climategate Is No Big Deal, Why Are Questions About It Met With An Armed Response? Dissenting opinions against the world government will not be tolerated. The boilerplate response on behalf of the guardians of the global warming scam is to claim that the climategate scandal holds no significance whatsoever

The Kanban Story: Kanban Alone Is Not Enough

Recently I had a lot of occasions to discuss Kanban with other people, the coolest one being last meeting of Engineering Academy “Diamond Polishing” (for you who speaks Polish there’s video recording available online ). One of things which I stressed during these discussions is that Kanban is not enough to manage a software project

Journalist and filmmaker Phelim McAleer (Mine Your Own Business, Not Evil Just Wrong) attempts to ask Al Gore a question about ‘Climategate’ emails at the UN Climate Change Conference. A review of the iMac 27" Core 2 Duo: yep, it’s still an iMac

Though users in general—and Mac users in particular—are quickly moving to a notebook-dominated world, Apple’s iconic iMac remains a strong seller in the desktop market. And for good reason: aside from the obvious portability offered by a notebook, the sleek machine offers more bang for your buck than a mobile, but without any of the ugliness that typically comes with a desktop machine. Apple’s latest iMac offerings continue this trend by refining the cosmetic aspects of the machine and adding just enough new stuff on the inside to make things interesting

Climategate! Journalist asks question, gets armed response!

Copenhagen ‘09 This is a blatant attempt to stop journalists doing journalism and asking hard questions. It is not the job of armed UN security officers to stop legitimate journalists asking legitimate questions of senior members of the UNs IPCC. A Stanford Professor has used United Nation security officers to silence a journalist asking him inconvenient questions during a press briefing at the climate change conference in Copenhagen.

What are those business goals?

A truism in the software development business is that systems exist to support business goals. Any system design decisions  that does not support business goals should not be made, and system design decisions that do support the business goals should be prioritized based on the particular goals. The assumptions made in the above statement are that the business goals for a system are explicit and agreed upon by all stakeholders.

Poulsbo mess casts a shadow on Intel’s Moblin project

The Moblin project was launched by Intel in 2007 with the goal of building a Linux-based platform for small form-factor mobile devices. Although the underlying technology is compelling and exhibits considerable potential, Intel’s surprising degree of ambivalence on fundamental issues like hardware compatibility and open drivers could threaten Moblin’s relevance
