New Outsourced WPA/WPA2 Enterprise Service Launches

Eric Geier, a long-time tech writer and reporter, has launched NoWiresSecurity: Geier, who has been in this business of writing about Wi-Fi and wireless for longer than me, offers AuthenticateMyWiFi, a way to use 802.1X authentication for secure WPA/WPA2 Enterprise logins on a Wi-Fi network without hosting and managing the server yourself. The service is billed on a monthly rate based on the number of user accounts. WPA/WPA2 Enterprise allow a Wi-Fi user to connect using credentials, typically a user name and password, which are passed securely over a network without first providing access to the network’s resources.

A brief comparative summary of the economic impact of sports

It’s another in a long line of sketchy analyses by yours truly, but at least one person found it kind of interesting. Here’s the revenue generated by major professional sports in the US, taken from the Sporting News , in 2008: National Football League – $6.7 billion National Basketball League – $3.4 billion Major League Baseball – $6.1 billion National Hockey League – $2.3 billion The grand total from these venerable enterprises: $18.5 billion. By comparison, the American Sportfishing Association estimates that recreation fishing generates over $45 billion per year in retail sales alone.

Oracle VM Videos On YouTube

As my boss, Wim Coekaerts pointed out on his blog yesterday, there are a number of good, educational videos covering Oracle VM on YouTube, including coverage of some topics for Oracle VM 2.2 (the latest release). Very easy to find, just go to YouTube and search on Oracle VM (or Oracle VM 2.2 to see those specifically). Of course, you’ll also find some videos on reference customers, partners, and even a video interview with me from the Cloud Computing Expo that I mentioned in my earlier blog entry

AMD CPU and GPU Technology – Flying High in the TOP500 Supercomputer List

While a lot of folks know me for having a passion (or is it an obsession) for virtualization and cloud computing – many people don’t realize that I am really a refugee from the world of High Performance Computing. This week I get to put on my propeller hat and attend SC09 in Portland to catch up on the leading innovations – and have a chance to say “Aloha” to my former colleagues at the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC). One of the big events of this annual supercomputing conference is the release of the TOP500 Supercomputing List

Frying Pan River, we have a situation

Picked up via Moldy Chum , it seems the Frying Pan was blown out during the prime late summer season (I had no clue, but I’m sure you’re used to that by now). Water-related recreation in the area was non-existent. The City of Basalt and the Ruedi Water and Power Authority are up in arms and want answers : The Basalt town government, Ruedi Water and Power Authority, and fishing guides want a detailed review and explanation of the reclamation bureau’s releases from Ruedi Reservoir.

Now that AMD and Intel have settled, the fight really begins

This past Friday, Intel and AMD announced a settlement in their acrimonious antitrust dispute, with AMD clearly coming out on top to the tune of $1.25 billion in cash and a host of concessions. Both companies hosted conference calls that Friday morning, and later in the day the released excerpts from the agreement that makes up the non-cash portion of the deal, in which Intel agrees to a number of conditions that should make life much easier for AMD and its fab spinoff, GlobalFoundries.

Researcher Collaboration – Web 2.0 – Strength in science collaboration – BBC Article

This looks like a useful Web 2.0 collaboration tool for researchers – The BBC article is at – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8342851.stm “Victor Henning is the co-founder of Mendeley, an online collaboration tool which was created specifically for scientists. The free software allows scientists and researchers to upload papers which are then trawled for bibliographic data – author, title, issue and so on – and paired up with similar papers already in the database.” “Mendeley is supposed to take the work out of managing these [research] papers.,” explains Mr Henning
