Google Adsense Targets This Ad Pretty Much Perfectly

Google’s Adsense system is one of the thousands of artificial intelligence engines out there everyday that we often overlook.  Thousands of engineers have worked for years to tweek the system and optimize it for pairing the right advertisement next to the appropriate online content.  Improving this artificial intelligence by even a tiny fraction can mean millions of extra advertisement clicks and subsequently millions of extra dollars in Google’s coffers.

Blackboard (and other closed LMS systems) make university a rip-off

Here is an anecdote (it happened to me today) outlining just one of the many things that is wrong with closed class websites and LMS in general: I am currently working at a software company as an intern, writing a program. Now of course, as anybody who has taken Software Engineering knows (don’t worry readers who are not in Computer Science, I promise I will not lose you), when you make software you have to provide different types of documentation about it. Things like, why you made it, h

Testable Hypothesis for Intelligent Design, Pt 3

Earlier I proposed that evolution is driven by a “Mutation Algorithm.” I said the Mutation Algorithm is the highest software layer in DNA and it explores evolutionary pathways by testing new features (fur, skin patterns, claws, limbs, wings) like switching out blades on a Swiss Army Knife. I explained why Junk DNA is one of the most backwards theories in the history of modern science. I said that the “random mutation” theory of evolution is an anti-scientific proposal which fails to presume

1TB mobile drive launches now; they’ll be useful next year

January 5, 2007 is a red-letter date in the history of storage, the day when Hitachi launched the world’s first Terabyte-sized hard disk. Two and a half years later, Western Digital has reprised the feat in the 2.5″ mobile drive space by launching the WD Scorpio Blue 1TB , the world’s first Terabyte-sized mobile hard disk, at a $250 MSRP. July 27, 2009 is less likely to be a red-letter date in the history of storage, though, for form factor reasons

Apple eats up Toshiba flash, but maybe not 1GHz ARM for iPod

Despite ramping up production of its NAND flash chips, Toshiba is telling some customers that it might have trouble meeting supply for their orders—a sign that Apple is taking the bulk of Toshiba’s supply for iPods. Meanwhile, Samsung has produced a 1GHz version of the ARM processor used in the iPhone 3GS, though its likely Apple could pass over the design for chips designed in-house by PA Semi.

Netbook titans holding new models until Pine Trail

Acer and ASUS, the two largest netbook OEMs, are not going to launch more Menlow-based netbooks, allowing their current N270 and N280-based models to carry the day until Intel’s Pine Trail platform makes its debut early next year . The new platform will bring higher performance, lower power consumption, simplified board layouts enabling smaller boards, and higher cost.  Not as clear is how NVIDIA’s Ion platform will fare in a world where Intel’s onboard GPU is sitting inside every Atom die.

Verizon Limits Free Wi-Fi to Laptops

The fine print is now available on Verizon’s free Wi-Fi deal for its broadband customers: Only laptop Windows XP/Vista (32-bit only) users need apply. Which seems insane to me, but it’s also in line with Verizon’s remarkable micro-management of its users and usage. The “how to get it” page explaining how to obtain free Wi-Fi notes, “Verizon Wi-Fi is not available for PDAs, phones, desktop PCs or Macs.” I can reason that the PDA and phone issue is that the company hasn’t figured out which smartphones and others to add the service to and whether to charge for it.
