Flight Status for the iPhone

Frequent fliers like myself love the app Flight Status . It gives the ontime/late/cancelled status of thousands of flights, as well as the arrival gates and baggage carousels. You can filter by airline, location, time etc to find your flight quickly, and it is optimised for the iPhone-size screen.

Southwest Signs with Row 44

Southwest announced on its blog that it’s signed a contract and the next steps have begun for Wi-Fi: This is good news for Row 44 and its investors, as Row 44 has two airlines (Alaska and Southwest) that want its satellite-based Internet service, but until today there was no word of how that was going to proceed for either airline. On the blog, Southwest’s Dave Ridley wrote that the airline will start installations in the second quarter of 2010, and install about 15 aircraft a month from a fleet of 540 with a goal to ramp up to 25 planes a month. That puts them at 2012 on this scheduled for full-fleet rollout.

Single WordPress to WordPress MU Export/Import Workaround

I ran into an issue with my default php.ini maximum upload size being 2MB and the www.golod.com WP file being larger than 5MB…but that was an easy fix. For those of you trying to upgrade from a few single wordpress installs to one MU WordPress install, this might be a good workaround for you to import a large database into MU .

Apple iPad: Good news or bad news for Amazon.com?

Apple’s upcoming iPad includes the iBooks apps, which combines e-book reader software with an iTunes-like service for selling books. I was somewhat surprised by iBooks. I had just assumed that Apple was going to let existing e-book distributors like Amazon.com and FictionWise install apps on the iPad and sell books that way

Back in Black(berry)

A year and a few months after dumping my Blackberry for a Nokia flip, I’ve turned back to the dark side. Part of the reason was simply needing email in my pocket again – I’ve got several projects going on right now and I’m feeling the heat every time I step away from the desk for more than five minutes.

iPad Creates New Class of 3G Device, Plan

Apple’s 3G iPad models will come with two unique aspects: only unlocked, no-contract services: It’s not surprising that Apple will have Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi plus 3G variants of its new iPad mobile device. Rather, it’s that Apple finally got its demands met about how consumers will control the relationship with cellular carriers. The iPad will come with a micro SIM , a new tiny form factor for SIM in mobile devices that’s not yet in real use, as far as I can tell

Attracting a More Diverse Group of Students

In the fall of 2009 Georgia Tech started a high school weekend computing program. We asked for teacher recommendations for students with at least a B average that have had some computing experience. We weren’t looking for the students who already love computers and programming and intend to major in computer science at Georgia Tech.

Can Movie Computer Screens Help Us Design Better

NPR did a story recently on the computer screens that we see in the movies. You know the ones with big read “Access Denied” messages that look nothing like anything you have ever seen in real life. The story was called Hollywood’s Computers: Telling A Story In A Flash and it got me thinking.
