Latest migrations show SSD is ready for some datacenters

When we asked the IT pros in the Server Room to name the number one barrier to solid state disk (SSD) adoption in the enterprise, “price” was the near unanimous consensus. SSD storage is still significantly more expensive than rotating magnetic media, but with datacenters becoming ever more constrained by power and cooling considerations, the overall price picture for SSD vs. HDD keeps getting better.

ABN Newswire – Australian Market Report of October 19: US Deficit Hits Record High

The Dow index gave up last week’s success and slipped back slightly over the weekend. US and European stock markets closed lower on Friday after the latest US corporate results disappointed high hopes and pushed Wall Street back down through the key 10000 points level. The US budget deficit hit a record US$1.4 trillion to the end of the fiscal year, the US government said on Friday, as the recession and a series of bank rescues cut a hole in public finances

ISV Yellowpages continues to grow!

A while back I talked about how the Software & Partner Directory (or ISV Yellowpages, if you will) are growing with more and more listings of software companies and their products that are optimized for Intel platforms. You may have noticed recently that http://bx.intel.com , the Intel Business Exchange Solutions & Services Store has a new look and feel and that’s because those solutions have now transitioned to the Software & Partner Directory ( http://ibx.intel.com/directory/ ), and in many cases the Intel Business Exchange Software Store ( http://sx.intel.com )

Why should I incorporate keywords in my blog titles?

I’m not sure if it’s got something to do with the changing of the seasons or the changing of some search engine algorithms, but I’ve seen a lot of posts recently about the important of creating keyword rich titles for your blogs . This is a pretty sensitive subject for me. As a proud recipient of a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing (that’s right – I’m a geek at heart, but not on paper), whenever I used to finish an awesome blog post, I wanted to give it an awesome title and to me, awesome title = witty and enticing

ABN Newswire – Australian Market Report of October 16: Market Boosted by Higher Oil Prices

US stocks climbed to a 2009 new high on Thursday, as the oil prices surge buoyed energy companies. The financial and IT stocks retreated over mixed economic data and corporate outlook.

Wi-Fi Direct protocol to ease peer-to-peer WiFi connections

The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced a new way for WiFi-enabled devices to connect to one another, even in the absence of a WiFi base station. The new protocol, dubbed “Wi-Fi Direct,” will allow any device that implements the standard to connect directly to another device to send and receive data. Previously codenamed ” Wi-Fi peer to peer ,” the technology allows any device with WiFi to easily connect to another, such as a cell phone or camera to a printer, or even a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

The audacity of telling it like it is

It’s nearly always fun listening to what Jeff Matthews is not making up on any given day, and his latest on “ healthcare reform ” is no different: Say what you like about healthcare reform—say that it is necessary, or it is unnecessary; say that it is just another government program bound to fail, or that it is an important government duty to pick up where the private sector has failed; say that it is a manufactured crisis or that it is the most serious political issue of our time—but you can’t say this bill is rational, well-considered, and logical. Read the whole thing . Meanwhile, Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic notes health insurers aren’t too happy about what’s going on (not surprising), and somewhat confirms Matthew’s previous mention of big hospitals and pharma getting the gravy

Simply Spectacular Virtualization with 4P Six-Core AMD Opteron™ Processor-based Systems

When I was attending VMworld in September, one of the most frequently asked question was “how do I decide whether to use 2P Intel Xeon 5500 processor-based servers or 4P Six-Core AMD Opteron TM processor-based servers for virtualization?” Over the past few weeks I have done a lot of research and put together a solid picture of where a 4P server can provide an amazing amount of value and efficiency. Low and behold – I was not the only person working on this thought thread. We recently sent Johan De Gelas with AnandTech a 4P Six-Core AMD Opteron processor-based system.  And in his review, “Expensive Quad Sockets vs
