Day of chipset reckoning arrives for NVIDIA

It has been obvious for some time that integrated graphics processors (IGPs) will move from the chipset onto the processor die, and that this development will leave NVIDIA with no market for its chipsets. Such an eventuality is, in fact, the reason behind the oft-mooted skunkworks NVIDIA x86 project (the thinking goes that NVIDIA will try to compete with CPU/GPU combo chips from Intel and AMD by producing a CPU/GPU combo of its own).

DRAM study turns assumptions about errors upside down

The conventional wisdom about DRAM error rates is that errors are rare, and the majority of the errors that do occur are so-called “soft errors”—randomly corrupted bits that have been flipped by incoming cosmic rays. But a recent large-scale study of DRAM errors released by Google turns this wisdom on its head, and in doing so reinforces the importance of error correction coding (ECC) and regular hardware replacement for datacenter machines

Drinking from the Fire Hose of Information!

Drinking from the Fire Hose of Information or five things to do to improve status reporting. When providing status of a problem it is important to provide the right level of detail, so the situation can be easily digested. A lot of technical team members provide status and it is like trying to get a drink of water from a fire hose.

The State of OpenCL & the First End-User OpenCL Drivers

Last week NVIDIA released their first set of end-user OpenCL drivers . Previously OpenCL drivers had only been available for developers on the NVIDIA side of things, and this continues to be the case on the AMD side of things. With NVIDIA’s driver release, the launch of AMD’s 5800 series, and some recent developments with OpenCL, this is a good time to recap the current state of OpenCL, and what has changed since our OpenCL introductory article from last year

Microsoft Research demoes five multitouch mice

Microsoft Research and the Applied Sciences Group have developed five input device prototypes that combine a variation of multitouch sensing to the standard capabilities of a typical computer mouse. Microsoft believes these prototypes have the potential to set a new standard for “expressive interaction.” Each device explores a different touch sensing strategy via a different form factor. Microsoft sent us a short five-minute video that demonstrates each of the five prototypes

Exploring the Tao of managing complex software projects

In the world where enterprises find themselves today, it is now - more than ever before - untenable to be in a situation where significant investments are made in strategic software projects, that then fail. Break it down…

For some reason when I work on personal software projects I always start on big ambitious 0nes and never small realistic ones. I get this idea and I get ambitious and work every second I have to spare on it and then burn out and get tired of it and leave it, and all this within a really short timespan. Most ideas I get have to do with a small concept or technique I want to try out but it seems that I can’t make sense of them unless I put it in a bigger picture.
